Barbara Monahan - Featured Student
What's your favorite SOC class and why? My favorite SOC class was Coaching Proficiency #8 Hones in on What’s Important because the instructor encouraged me to play the coach role during the class. Prior to taking this class I did not feel confident enough to coach with my peers. This experience was a great awakening for me. I also met some really great coaches and a few of us are meeting weekly for a coaching triad. What's the most exciting personal project you are working on? I am working on developing a program to coach adults in communicating with youth. I am very excited about this because the youth in our society are confused and frustrated. They need adults in their life to help them get through the issues they face in their daily lives. Adults are often caught up in the issues of their life and fail to see the youth's struggles. Bringing these two groups together through enhanced communication skills will enable them to respect, understand and help each other. What advice would you give to new SOC students? Don’t get overwhelmed! Think of all of the SOC offerings as a big banquet table filled with food. You wouldn’t sit down and gobble all that food at once. Would you? Take your time, enjoy what you are learning and savor your growth! Be open to experiencing the coaching process when you take a teleclass. Participate as much as possible and you will learn a great deal about yourself and others in the class. Attend live events because you will meet your peers, learn and get energized by the positive affirming experience. I attended a Coaching Springboard and met many really great coaches who were willing to share their experiences and ideas. What does coaching mean to you? Coaching is a calling for me. Coaching is the catalyst that will bring a great awakening to our society because coaches are making profound changes in people's lives. I am excited to be apart of the Coaching field and grateful for the SOC because it enables me to learn all that I can so that I am the best that I can be. What's your favorite coaching proficiency? Would you like to share an experience related to that proficiency? My favorite coaching proficiency is Respects the Client Humanity. My 12 year old son does not enjoy school and he had a project to complete in 2 weeks. He usually works on his assignment the night before it is due. I knew this approach would not be successful for him so I decided to coach him. I asked him if he would like to play a game with me. I asked if he would like to play the client and I would play the coach. He sheepishly smiled and said yes. I began to coach him and he committed to getting the project done several days before it was due. I asked him if I could share a distinction with him. He said yes. I asked if he knew the difference between getting something done and completing something. He showed me what the difference is by drawing a circle. He drew a circle really fast to describe getting it done and when describing completion he took his time to ensure it was right. I said yes, that is exactly it. So, how will it be for this project? He said that it will be complete! He completed the project several days before it was due and received a 97!!! Where do you see the field of coaching in 10 years? I see coaching skills becoming a necessity of everyday life. Employers are measuring current and potential employees by their interpersonal skills because they see an increase in productivity, morale and retention when these skills are utilized. This makes it extremely important for coaches to commit to life long learning. Coaches will be in great demand to satisfy the surplus of people who want to learn coaching skills to improve their performance. Barbara Monahan is the President of BAM! Coaching, LLC.
